The Funeral (1996)

THE FUNERAL, a new gangster flick from director Abel Ferrara (THE
ADDICTION, BAD LIEUTENANT), was attempted on a drizzly Saturday
afternoon, after an a.m. spent baking pies, washing clothes, and
performing minor repairs on the Elvismobile. The day was gray and,
in those early opening scenes, so was Ken Kelsch's photography. I
knew my eyelids were in trouble when neither Christopher Walken nor
Chris Penn caused me to sit up straight in my seat. When I awoke--
to gunshots, I believe-- a half-hour had passed. I grabbed my note
pad and Santa cap and pledged to return on another day, at another
time than nap time. (Rated "R"/108 min.)
