The Butcher Boy (1998)

I don't think I can be much help with Neil Jordan's THE BUTCHER BOY,
still playing in Chapel Hill. (Through today at the Carolina; opens
Friday at the Chelsea.) Loved the pictures; was baffled by the words.
(I understood about half of the dialogue.) Good story arc, tho, and
an amazing performance from newcomer Eamoon Owens. Rich production
values, too. If you can handle the accents, go see it. Hell, make
a date just to see Sinead O'Conner's cameo as the Virgin Mary. With
Stephen Rea, Fiona Shaw, Alan Boyle, and Aisling O'Sullivan. Screen-
play by Patrick McCabe and Neil Jordan, based on McCabe's novel.
(Rated "R"/108 min.)
