High Art (1998)

HIGH ART has a pair of terrific performances from Ally Sheedy and
newcomer Radha Mitchell, as a reclusive photographer and an up-and-
coming magazine editor respectively, whose lives intersect after
one discovers the other living upstairs. Rather bleak, to be sure,
but with believably frank depictions of drug addiction and lesbian
sex. I don't know about all that highfalutin "art talk," though.
With Patricia Clarkson, Bill Sage, Tammy Grimes, and Gabriel Mann.
Written and directed by editor-turned-filmmaker Lisa Cholodenko.
(Rated "R"/101 min.)
