RALEIGH - Engine 1, Ladder 4, Battalion 3, and EMS 11 among the first units arriving on South Saunders Street south of McDowell Street, to discover heavy storm damage to commercial and residential structures including downed power poles and power lines. Additional hazards included natural gas leak(s) and vehicles attempting to travel on South Saunders Street. Battalion 3 established command and requested activation of NC USAR Task Force 8. Second series of photos is about two hours later, after command has relocated north a number of blocks, and firefighters and USAR team members are conducting a primary search of structures in the area.
