{"id":1285,"date":"2016-10-03T18:36:17","date_gmt":"2016-10-03T22:36:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/legeros.com\/blog\/?p=1285"},"modified":"2016-12-31T11:52:59","modified_gmt":"2016-12-31T16:52:59","slug":"wake-county-rural-fire-protection-progress-report-1956-to-1957","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/legeros.com\/blog\/wake-county-rural-fire-protection-progress-report-1956-to-1957\/","title":{"rendered":"Wake County Rural Fire Protection Progress Report &#8211; 1956 to 1957"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From a report received around June 1, 1957, and probably covering the prior fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p>Rural fire departments established in ten communities in Wake County:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Zebulon<\/li>\n<li>Apex<\/li>\n<li>Cary<\/li>\n<li>Garner<\/li>\n<li>Fuquay-Varina<\/li>\n<li>Morrisville<\/li>\n<li>Knightdale<\/li>\n<li>Wake Forest<\/li>\n<li>Six Forks<\/li>\n<li>Wendell.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Others are in the process of organizing, and some are about ready to begin purchasing equipment. These departments have 242 volunteer members and &#8220;are rendering the people of the county a service that cannot be estimated in dollars and cents.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Summary of calls of the nine departments that have been operating the longest (all of the above, except Wendell):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>241 fires fought<\/li>\n<li>20 industrial and business buildings<\/li>\n<li>62 dwellings and outhouses<\/li>\n<li>44 grass and woods fires<\/li>\n<li>44 autos and trucks<\/li>\n<li>15 tobacco barns<\/li>\n<li>65 other types of fires.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Value of property:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$223,010 worth of property destroyed<\/li>\n<li>$350,500 worth of property that was on fire, and saved<\/li>\n<li>$549,200 worth of property that was adjacent, and would have burned<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One life saved. Plus a &#8220;large variety of community services&#8221; also performed by &#8220;these men.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Source: Resolution adopted by Wake County Commissioners on June 3, 1957, and as presented to Col.
