New Zealand director Peter Jackson (DEAD ALIVE, BAD TASTE) recounts the real-life story of two schoolgirls (Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynske) whose "unhealthy" friendship led to terrible, tragic results in 1954. Using excerpts from one of their diaries, Jackson follows the girls into their own breathtaking world of fantasy and denial. Mesmerizing, heartbreaking stuff, if you don't mind the frantic camera work and poor lighting. Remarkable acting by Winslet and Lynskey, as well. Complain loud enough to the management of the Chelsea (in Chapel Hill) and maybe you can even see it in focus! Grade: A-
