The find of the week. Director Peter Yates (BREAKING AWAY) adapts Shane Connaughton's novel about a college-aged Irish lad (Matt Keeslar) struggling to adjust to the death of his mum. In his path are numerous obstacles, ranging from a demanding dad (Albert Finney) to his first girlfriend (Victoria Smurfit) to the ever- present IRA. Working with a fine cast and a handsome production design, Yates creates a believable, matter-of-fact reality that is all at once both terrible and touching. Life is difficult in this place, he reminds us. Highly recommended. (Rated "R"/~120 min.) Grade: A- Copyright 1995 by Michael J. Legeros
