More noir, this time from SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE auteur Steven Soderbergh. Peter Gallagher stars as a reformed gambler, back in town after a move to Splitsville. He's working a new job, as an armored car driver, but he wants his old flame back. Too bad she's now married to the mob. THE UNDERNEATH starts with enough intrigue, but it doesn't go anywhere. The set-up takes too long, and the payoff is chump change. As for Gallagher, the best that can be said about *his* performance is that, in uniform, he looks quite a bit like Barney Fife. That's a section 12 offense, Mister! Based on CRISS CROSS (1948). Grade: C- Copyright 1995 Michael J. Legeros Movie Hell is a trademark of Michael J. Legeros
