While You Were Sleeping (1995)

If you can believe it, then you can enjoy it.  SPEED sweetheart Sandra
Bullock stars as a Chicago transit worker (yeah right) who gets mistaken
for the fiance of a man in a coma (Peter Gallagher).  She goes along
with the ruse, because she's had a crush on the guy for weeks..  and his
family likes her..  and it's Christmas.. and she's an orphan..  etc.
etc.

Contrived as all get-out, WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING possesses an honest,
tasteful charm that's very welcome.  The humor is clean, the chemistry
is strong, and the supporting cast includes such stalwarts as Glynis
Johns, Jack Warden, and Peter Boyle.  The latter plays the father who
deals in estate furniture.  Quoth the creature: "we buy furniture from
dead people."

Oddly enough:  Ms. Bullock attended our very own East Carolina
               University.
