THE ASSOCIATE is a glass-ceiling comedy that culminates with Whoopi Goldberg impersonating the male business partner that her character (a Wall Street wizard) invents to attract clients. Her disguise-- a make-up job a la MRS. DOUBTFIRE-- is a walking embarrassment, but it happens late in the movie and after we've had our laughs. (With the exception of a urination gag that's arguably worth the price of admission, the story doesn't know what to do with him/her.) Much more interesting is how the movie makes no notice of Whoopi's race or her outrageous appearance. Would she need a partner if she got a haircut? And who's the guy playing the female gossip columnist? That's a man dressed as a woman, no? (Rated "PG"/113 min.) Grade: C+ Copyright 1996 by Michael J. Legeros
