Playing God (1997)

PLAYING GOD is no fun. In this lousy leftover from last spring,
David Duchovny ("The X-Files") plays a drug-addicted surgeon who
lost his license but still gets to practice, courtesy of an L.A.
mobster (Timothy Hutton) who repays a favor by supplying patients
in various stages of "fixibility." Duchovny does damage on two
fronts-- sleepwalking through his role *and* providing the mind-
numbing narration. Hutton is better-- more alive, but without an
interesting-enough character. (His blonde-tipped locks are quite
the scary sight, tho.) Director Andy Wilson is trying to be hip.
And smart. And shocking. And funny. I stirred once in 35 min-
utes, to actually laugh at something, and left. (Rated "R"/93
min.)

Grade: W/O
