The 1997 Oscar nominations will be announced on Tuesday, February 10, at 8:38 EST. Here's my take on the major categories: Best Picture ------------ o AMISTAD o AS GOOD AS IT GETS o GOOD WILL HUNTING o L.A. CONFIDENTIAL o TITANIC ? THE SWEET HEREAFTER Best Director ------------- o James L. Brooks, AS GOOD AS IT GETS o James Cameron, TITANIC o Curtis Hanson, L.A. CONFIDENTIAL o Steven Spielberg, AMISTAD o Gus Van Sant, GOOD WILL HUNTING ? Atom Egoyan, THE SWEET HEREAFTER Best Actor ---------- o Matt Damon, GOOD WILL HUNTING o Leonardo DiCaprio, TITANIC o Peter Fonda, ULEE'S GOLD o Dustin Hoffman, WAG THE DOG o Jack Nicholson, AS GOOD AS IT GETS ? Robert Duvall, THE APOSTLE Best Actress ------------ o Helena Bonham Carter, WINGS OF THE DOVE o Judi Dench, MRS. BROWN o Pam Grier, JACKIE BROWN o Helen Hunt, AS GOOD AS IT GETS o Kate Winslet, TITANIC ? Julie Christie, AFTERGLOW Best Supporting Actor --------------------- o Rupert Everett, MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING o Anthony Hopkins, AMISTAD o Kevin Spacey, L.A. CONFIDENTIAL o Burt Reynolds, BOOGIE NIGHTS o Robin Williams, GOOD WILL HUNTING ? Robert Forster, JACKIE BROWN Best Supporting Actress ----------------------- o Kim Basinger, L.A. CONFIDENTIAL o Minnie Driver, GOOD WILL HUNTING o Julianne Moore, BOOGIE NIGHTS o Sarah Polley, THE SWEET HEREAFTER o Gloria Stuart, TITANIC ? Sigourney Weaver, THE ICE STORM Notes ----- I'm guessing on lots of late-year stuff, with total (or near-total) shut-outs for IN & OUT, THE ICE STORM, THE FULL MONTY, MRS. BROWN, and A THOUSAND ACRES. (I believe Jessica Lange is favored for the latter.) I don't see much momentum for JACKIE BROWN, either, short of an acting nod or two. And, of course, a screenplay slot. Maybe we'll see some surprises... Copyright 1998 Michael J. Legeros Movie Hell is a trademark of Michael J. Legeros
