DANCING AT LUGHNASA is a long sit. The plot: five single sisters
living in rural Ireland and struggling through the summer of '36.
(Long-absent brother returns; oldest sister loses job; simple-mind-
ed sister finds love, etc.) The acting's great, the accent's com-
prehendible, and the fields of green gorgeous. Too bad the drama-
tic RPMs are revved only slightly higher than TASTE OF CHERRY, the
last nap-inducer that I caught the Colony. Hmmmm. Maybe I need to
cut back on the Jerry Springer... With Meryl Streep, Catherine Mc-
Cormack, Kathy Burke, Sophie Thompson, Brid Brennan, and Michael
Gambon. Pat O'Connor (INVENTING THE ABBOTS) directs and Frank Mc-
Guinness adapted the script from Brian Friel's play. (Rated "PG-
13"/95 min.)
