DOWN IN THE DELTA is worth a watch, if you can find it, despite the painfully uneven acting, the over-length, and an utterly confusing coda. So exactly who handed down the candelabra to whom? And in what order?? A sensational Alfre Woodard stars as the unemployed, unmarried, inner-city mother of two, whose life expectedly changes during a summer visit down south. (She takes the kids to stay with her grandparents, one of whom has Alzheimer's and requires full- time care.) The excellent (if inadequately handled) ensemble cast includes Mary Alice, Loretta Davis, Al Freeman Jr., Wesley Snipes for a few scenes, and the late Esther Rolle. Poet Maya Angelou makes her directing debut, from a script by Myron Goble. (Rated "PG-13"/111 min.) Grade: C+ Copyright 1998 Michael J. Legeros Movie Hell is a trademark of Michael J. Legeros
