MIGHTY JOE YOUNG isn't anything to go ape over. Excellent effects, sure, plus gorilla my dreams Charlize Theron (CELEBRITY, THE DEV- IL'S ADVOCATE) to study at length. (For a jungle girl, those gams are sure smooth...) The broad, by-the-numbers script, however, is strictly for kids. That is, if you don't mind Disney's murder of a little girl's mother in the first reel. Trust me: for fifteen or so fun minutes of a downtown Hollywood rampage, the other ninety- five-- plus Goofy short at the start-- ain't worth it. Special effects second-banana Bill Paxton co-stars. Rade Sherbedgia, Peter Firth, David Paymer, and Regina King also appear. Rick Baker did Kong's make-up effects. Ron Underwood (TREMORS) directs. (Rated "PG"/110 min.)
