MY GIANT gets less funny and more sentimental as it goes. Though it boasts one of the best sight gags of the year, the plot is walk- out worthy lame. (Mutt and Jeff cross the country... to meet Ste- ven Seagal? Huh?) As a small, small-time Hollywood agent, Billy Crystal's insider quips are quite funny. (He's a stitch in the first hour, while stranded in a Romanian monastery.) His frame- filling foil, Gheorghe Muresan, has a natural charm, though his seven-foot-something size isn't played nearly enough for laughs. (Instead of increasing hilarity, we get increasing humanity. Oy.) Kathleen Quinlan (APOLLO 13) plays Crystal's character's separated wife and she's almost unrecognizable. (They've made her look older *and* heavier. Not a befitting fate for a babe.) And, for about fifteen minutes at the end, before the happy endings commence a- commencin', Mr. Squinty shows up. Curiously, he delivers one of his most relaxed performances to date. Memo to Steven Seagal: you should play yourself more often... Directed by Michael Lehmann, who you can choose to remember for either HEATHERS or HUDSON HAWK. (Rated "PG"/97 min.) Grade: C Copyright 1998 Michael J. Legeros Movie Hell is a trademark of Michael J.
