NIGHTWATCH is dead on arrival. Director Ole Bornedal, remaking his Danish-language original, gets the super-duper, extra-creepy-and- with-a-cherry-on-top tone just right. Far less-successful is the confusing and increasingly implausible plot. And then there's the small matter of sustained tension, of which the film has none. At least the finale is lively. Josh Brolin escapes from a pair of handcuffs in the most grisly fashion I've ever seen. And Patricia Arquette uses those scary teeth of hers to pull a fire alarm with her mouth. The entire audience (me) cheered. With Ewan McGregor, Nick Nolte, John C. Reilly, and Brad Dourif. (Rated "R"/ 105 min.) Grade: D Copyright 1998 Michael J.
