THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY is the funniest film I've seen in a year's time. Maybe longer. Either you split your sides in this one or you don't. Peter and Bobby Farrelly (DUMB AND DUMBER, KING- PIN) direct this seemingly innocuous romantic comedy-- isn't the poster cute!-- and their sense of humor is about as explicit, out- rageous, and political incorrect as an "R" rating allows. (That they get away with showing what they show-- including a wincing below-the-belt close-up-- may be *the* great MPAA mystery of all time.) Be forewarned, there are slow spots. This ain't no NAKED GUN gag-fest and some of the better bits take time to simmer. Try to take it on a literal level and you can't quite believe the char- acters, either. (Not that the story exactly begs to be taken ser- iously.) The gags that fly, though, fly high. Just remember to bring oxygen. And, if anyone comes across a poster of Matt Dillon in those *teeth*, please notify me immediately. With Lee Evans, Chris Elliott, Jeffrey Tambor, and Harland Williams. Written by Ed Decter, John J. Strauss, and the Farrelly Brothers. (Rated "R"/117 min.) Grade: B Copyright 1998 Michael J. Legeros Movie Hell is a trademark of Michael J. Legeros
