TWILIGHT is a dull detective tale, set in L.A. and starring Paul Newman as an ex-cop/dick/drunk, who gets involved in a murder mys- tery when asked by his best friend (Gene Hackman) to deliver a package to a woman, no questions asked. The matter is complicated by the fact that Newman's character both lives with and works as a handyman for his best friend's family. And he's attracted to his best friend's wife (Susan Sarandon). And there may be a skeleton in the closet involving her first husband, whose been presumed dead for decades. Boring stuff, but a star-studded bore. Too bad the script isn't more exciting. There's little snap and virtually no surprise to this undercooked potboiler from co-writer/director Robert Benton (NOBODY'S FOOL). Well, okay, at the 60-minute mark, Liev Schreiber gets a face-full of chicken wings. That was good for a laugh, and then I left. With James Garner, Stockard Chan- ning, Reese Witherspoon, and Giancarlo Esposito. (Rated "R"/94 min.) Grade: W/O Copyright 1998 Michael J. Legeros Movie Hell is a trademark of Michael J. Legeros
