Election (1999)

    
ELECTION is a wickedly funny (and heartily raunchy) black comedy/
character study about a high-school teacher (Matthew Broderick) and
his attempt to sabotage the election of a shoo-in for student coun-
cil prez (Reese Witherspoon, superb).  The plot's a bit overcompli-
cated, but co-writer/director Alexander Payne's unconventional nar-
rative (stills, voiceovers, multiple POVs, etc.) makes for a (mostly) 
memorable movie.  With Chris Klein, Jessica Campbell, Mark Harelik,
Phil Reeves, Molly Hagan, and Delaney Driscoll.  (Rated "R"/104 min.)
