THE MESSENGER is French filmmaker Luc Besson's big, bombastic, sumptuous-but-shrill, two-and-a-half hour history lesson starring Milla "That Fifth Element" Babe Jovovich. She could use an acting lesson or two, but she at least out-excites her big-name-but-bored supporting stars John Malkovich and Faye Dunaway. (They have a handful of scenes as the Marquis de Something and his mom.) Dustin Hoffman's in there, too, in a wild, weird cameo as an imaginary in- quisitor figmented by the title character! Too bad his scenes are all at the end... With Pascal Greggory, Vincent Cassel, Tcheky Karyo, Richard Ridings, Desmond Harrington, and Timothy West. Bes- son and Andrew Birkin are credited with the screenplay. (Rated "R"/ 148 min.) Grade: C+ Copyright 1999 Michael J. Legeros Movie Hell is a trademark of Michael J. Legeros
