The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)

THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY is a long, polished sit.  Two-and-a-half 
hours of Matt Damon wandering Italy, looking tortured.  The gener-
ously meaty plot is barely suspenseful, but the cast is sure hand-
some!  Jude Law and Gwenyth Paltrow, in particular, look as good as 
any of the gorgeous Italian locales.  (The bronze-tinted photogra-
phy helps immeasurably...)  Can't say I'd recommend it even as a 
freebie.  At least you'll leave feeling well-traveled...   With 
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Philip Baker Hall, Jack Davenport, and 
James Rebhorn.   Anthony Minghella writes and directs, from Patric-
ia's Highsmith's novel.  (Rated "R"/142 min.)
