Runaway Bride (1999)
RUNAWAY BRIDE is the painlessly pleasant, predictably perfunctory
re-pairing of PRETTY WOMAN players Richard Gere and Julia Roberts,
plus original director Garry Marshall. Before I left at the 30-
minute mark, bored, I noticed three things: Gere's New Yawker ac-
cent appears in some scenes and not in others, his character is a
"shock columnist" for a national newspaper that doesn't have one
in real-life, and the videotape footage of Robert's character's
previous weddings looks like it was shot with a full film crew in-
stead of a single, small-town-guy-with-camera. Not that the pack-
ed Friday afternoon audi-ence appeared to mind... With Joan Cu-
sack, Hector Elizondo, Rita Wilson, and Laurie Metcalf. Sara Par-
riott, Josann McGibbon, and Audrey Wells are credited with the
screenplay. (Rated "PG"/115 min.)
