01/17/09 56 W, 2 I - + 15 - 11 Garner Rescue, Then & Now

Some Saturday photo fun compares a pair of similiar shots of Garner Rescue & EMS. Top shot should be late 1970s is circa 1981 or 1982. Bottom shot is early last year. White 'n' orange versus blue 'n' white. Bread truck versus heavy rescue. Etcetera. Times they have changed. Click to enlarge either:

In the top photo, the van ambulance was a local conversion and it ran for a short time as a standard van before the fiberglass top was put on. The step-van pictured was actually the second crash truck. The first was an actual bread truck and was nicknamed “Wonder Wagon”. The WW logo was actually painted on the unit.

The top picture is more accurately 1981 or ’82-very shortly after the move from the old bldg. on Pearl St. (off Main). Note also we were known as Garner “St. Marys” Rescue Squad then. All volunteer, EMT staffing with numbered “duty crews” and an active jr. member (cadet) program for high school aged kids with an interest. Good group of folks back in the day!!

The good ole days. I was a cadet there from 1983-1985. Then ran as a member from 1986-1992. A lot of veteran medics in Wake County cut their eye teeth at “860”
