01/18/09 62 W - + 11 - 10 Fire and Water

The coldest night of the year saw a spat of water pipe problems today, and notably in Cary. Did I hear dispatch correctly around 7:00 p.m., informing all stations that CFD ran 51 fire calls today? Not counting first responder? There were also a number of reported fires around the area. Were any working? Tell your stories, and stay warm.

On day shift between 0630 and 1830 we sent out 54 fire alarms between RFD and county departments (not including Cary because we dont dispatch them). Considering there was 129 total fire dispatches during those 12 hours I would say the cold definately was a factor. Several incidents included water flow with building damage. 54 fire alarms is a steep increase from the normal number we send out. The previous day was only a total of 20 which is about normal for an average day.

Yes, you heard correctly. It ended up being a total of 63 calls for the shift. Mostly, broken sprlinker pipes in attic spaces and heads in empty buliding and 2- house fires going at the same time but nothing major from neither(one citizen was thawing out his garden hose ? & set the side of the house on fire). I wonder if B shift will have the same calls with the temps. rising today. Thanks goes out to Apex,Fairview, Swift Creek for the coverage during the peak times.

Decided to break down the calls from yesterday in Charlotte, while at work last night…

53 – Water Problems/Shut-off
103 – Fire Alarms (many were water-flow/sprinkler activations directly related to frozen/busted pipes)
27 – “Other” fires (vehicles, outside, trash, dumpster, brush, etc) – including 14 cars burning in 1 parking lot
9 – Reported structure fires (of which 2 were Working Fires)
202 – EMS/Rescue/MVAs
21 – Other misc. calls

GRAND TOTAL for 23.45hrs (1/17/09 07:00 – 1/18/09 06:45) = 415 calls
Luke - 01/18/09 - 23:45
