Found on Firegeezer, here's a neat incident photo showing apparatus at a castle fire in France. Yeah, that's a phrase that won't read in American newspapers. Castle fire. That's also the land of single-purpose aerial apparatus. Chassis and aerial only, as in other Euro countries. Raad Firegeezer's report, which includes assorted links. Or click to slightly enlarge:

Ahhhhh, the pump & tank on a ladder debate, it never gets old. Well, when I was assigned to Truck 8 (Seagrave w/o tank and pump) I can say it was nice because we had tons of compartment space. Sure, a downfall/pain is having to rely on an engine to always be available to pump to you at the big ones. Looking at a tiller though, without a pump and tank versus one with them, the difference in the length is nuts.

As far as having a pump/tank just in case you roll up on something? I’ve gone back and forth, but, looking at the three heavy rescues in the city which are pumpless/tankless and work out just fine, I’d be fine with a few trucks with no pump/tank. Heck, we’re still doing it with as much “playing time” the reserve ladders see in the city (Snorkel). As noted here, http://www.vententersearch.com/?p=473 , there are ways to make up for not carrying water, just gotta put the ol’ thinking cap on.

Pretty sharp rig that New Haven is…. I am kinda mixed on pump/tank Vs. no pump/tank…. I can see the benefits of it if the unit rolled up on a small fire, but thats what fire extinguishers are for..If it’s a larger fire your more than likely you will have other units on scene by the time your ready to make entry etc… If you need ladder pipe ops. well the hydrants are more than likely already in use and your going defensive… shut down the small lines run your line to the truck and start pumping…. oh yeah guess you need to figure your NP and FL to get the EP…. “ A good Truckie takes the heat off a good FF “ Take care and remember FTM-PTB-EGH

Actually, Mike, “castle fire” has been heard more than once on the airways in the US. For example, in 1977 the ROCHROANE CASTLE in Irvington, NY was destroyed in a spectacular blaze. I’m trying to find pictures of that operation, but here’s what it looked like pre-alarm: http://www.dupontcastle.com/castles/inde..
