10/05/06 130 W - + 16 - 12 RFD Apparatus Bid Awarded

The city of Raleigh has awarded the latest fire apparatus bid to Triad Fire, a Pierce dealer. The bids were for two rescue trucks (custom cab, non-walk-in body), one engine, and one 105-foot ladder. Timeframe for delivery is not known, but we would speculate 9 to 12 months.

Answer to frequent question/comment #1: The rescues will replace the department's two oldest units, presently operating as Rescue 14 and Rescue 19.

Answer to frequent question/comment #2: Weare not at this time aware of plans to increase staffing of either or both units. Nor does this fiscal year's budget indicate appropriations for such additional positions.

Answer to frequent question/comment #3: We are not aware of the department's long-term plans for additional aerial apparatus, and if future apparatus will be "sticks" versus "platforms."

Thats great raleigh has finally decided to go with true rescue trucks. Im glad to see that the new chief is making great progress in a positive direction.

The new aerial apparatus will replace the oldest frontline aerial apparatus, presently operating as Truck 16.

Yes Adam we are very pleased with the backing we get from Car 1. It is awesome to have a Chief that looks at the big picture!!! But we also have a good asst. chief in services that has worked hard on the right bids. Now for staffing issues, the budget might not have it planned but that doesn’t mean anything. In the past the PD Chief has asked for extra money for staffing during a already existing year. So I will always stay positive that staffing will come!

I just realized that there’s a local version of a Pierce rescue with a non-walk in body, Garner’s 1997 unit: http://www.legeros.com/ralwake/galleryw/..

Swift Creek Truck 1 as well. I it’s a 2000 http://www.legeros.com/ralwake/galleryw/..

Durham Highway Rescue 5 is also a Pierce non-walkin, I think a 2000 or 2001 http://www.legeros.com/ralwake/galleryw/..
