Imagine my surprise on Saturday, while reading Kurt Vonnegut's 1959 science-fiction novel The Sirens of Titans, to discover that the novel is the source of his famous quote: "I can think of no more stirring symbol of man's humanity to man than a fire engine." Not surprisingly, he once was a volunteer fireman.
