On February 22, 2007, one of the largest fires in the city's modern history destroyed twenty-seven townhomes and damaged eleven others off the 3500 block of Capital Boulevard. The six-alarm afternoon blaze brought over 150 firefighters to the scene, including fifteen engines, six ladders, two rescues, two brush trucks, two pumper-tankers, and a tanker. Crews battled the fast-moving flames that spread between townhome buildings, as well as embers that spread as far as a quarter-mile from the scene. County units assisted at the scene, and provided coverage at city fire stations. Twenty-nine families with 72 people were displaced. Damages exceeded $4 million.
