An explosion at a Carolina Power & Light substation at East Street and Martin Luther King Junior Parkway produced thick smoke that was visible for miles. The rush-hour explosion and fire brought hundreds of spectators, as well as a crash truck from Raleigh-Durham International Airport, summoned to spray foam on the burning transformers. About 75 residents were evacuated from the area and nearly 20,000 customers were left without electricity on one of the hottest nights of the year.
