Station Ten Log, 1971-72

Raleigh Fire Station 10 opened on February 24, 1971, at 6:00 p.m. Located at 2711 Sanderford Road, the single-engine station protected newly annexed areas southeast of the city. The following are excerpts from the first year's logs, minus most personnel notes and daily roll calls and radio checks. The entries have been slightly edited for spelling and abbreviations.

3/5/71 - 6:00 p.m. Received 2 tables, 2 table lights, and 10 kitchen chairs.

3/8/71 - 4:00 p.m. Two chairs delivered.

3/10/71 - 6:35 p.m. Eng 10 responded to telephone alarm 841 Newcomb Rd. 6:39 p.m. Eng 10 on scene, found rear bedroom, attic, and hall on fire. Eng 10 laid its own feeder line from hydrant on NW corner of Newcomb and Dandridge Rd. Used 450 feet of 2 1/2" from hydrant to pumper and 400 feet of 1 1/2" off pumper. Assisted at fire by Eng 3 and Truck 7. On duty at fire 90 minutes.

3/10/71 - 9:04 p.m. Eng 10 responded to telephone alarm at 2115 Dandridge Rd. 9:08 p.m. Eng 10 on scene, found fire coming out of front of house. Eng 3 laid feeder line to Eng 10. Fire was found to be in bedroom, attic, den, and hallway. On duty at fire 145 minutes. 12:11 a.m. Eng 10 back in service.

3/17/71 - 12:00 p.m. We put in drain line around station.

3/21/71 - 1:30 p.m. Dedication and opening of #10 station.

3/22/71 - 3:34 p.m. Eng 10 responded to box 252 at Glenbrook and Belmont Dr. False alarm.

3/24/71 through 4/9/71 - No calls.

4/10/71 - 4:10 p.m. Eng 10 responded to woods fire 2504 Fitzgerald St. 4:13 p.m. Eng 10 on scene, requested help from Forest Service. 5:52 p.m. Eng 10 back in service.

4/26/71 - 3:22 p.m. 1312 Savannah Dr. Sterilizer for baby bottle melted on stove and set fire to cabinets overhead, filled house with smoke. Owner Bonnie __________. Peoples Bank and Trust, Hillsborough St. Account number 811906070.

4/22/71 - 9:15 a.m. Eng 1 and Truck 7 came to Station 10 help plant grass.

4/24/71 - 4:13 p.m. Rags boiling in pot on stove. No damage.

4/25/71 - 5:11 a.m. Dispatched to wrong address, fire in county, taken care of by Garner.

5/7/71 - Door damaged at [fire station].

5/16/71 - 3:06 p.m. Eng 10 responded to telephone call to 506 Newcomb Rd. False call. [Firefighter] missed eng. Said he did not hear bell.

5/20/71 - 8:15 a.m. Water leak on Eng 10 reported to Parker at #2 station.

5/27/71 - 10:35 a.m. Eng 10 went to Station 1 for measuring of uniforms.

5/25/71 - 11:01 a.m. Eng 10 answered box 178 to 200 block of N. Person St. Turned back by radio.

6/3/71 - 8:30 a.m. [Captain] went to Memorial Auditorium for Chief Examination.

6/8/71 - 5:18 a.m. Eng 10 answered telephone alarm to 1600 block Rock Quarry Rd, to auto fire. 1965 Ford station wagon, license number RE 1638. Owned by Walter McClain, telephone number 832-1719. Was a total loss. Used booster line for approx. 25 minutes. Damage $450.00.

6/9/71 - 6:51 p.m. Verbal alarm to 2700 Casco Circle to investigate odor in house. Found box too close to light bulb.

6/11/71 - 11:04 a.m. May Parker brought 20 gallons of gas for the engine.

6/16/71 - 2:45 p.m. Eng 10 went to Station 2 for talk on investment program.

6/29/71 - 8:30 p.m. Eng 10 answered a verbal call to front of station. Car hit telephone pole. [Firefighters] removed the victim through the windshield and laid on canvas on sidewalk.

6/30/71 - 8:30 a.m. [Captain] gone to #1 for officers meeting. 1:30 p.m. Carried Eng 10 to #2 to fix radiator and leak in hose. Brought Eng 1 back to station and used while Eng 10 was being fixed.

7/20/71 - 4:10 p.m. Responded to verbal alarm at 2600 Sanderford Rd., to lawn mower on fire.

7/21/71 through 8/17/71 - No calls.

8/6/71 - 3:00 p.m. Overhead door company worked on doors but could not fix them. Man from the factory will be here next week.

8/24/71 - 8:05 p.m. [Engine 10] passed inspection and sticker was placed on windshield.

8/25/71 - 2:30 p.m. Changed oil in lawn mower.

8/26/71 - 9:00 a.m. Eng 10 went on inspection at Biltmore Hills shopping center.

9/7/71 - 12:47 a.m. Small fire in the body of a pick-up truck, out on arrival.

9/16/71 - 1:20 p.m. Eng 10 went to Watson's Seafood and Poultry plant to inspect. Hydrant on grounds can only be used by soft suction steamer connection.

9/20/71 - 2:00 p.m. Eng 10 went to the shop. Brake was grabbing.

9/25/71 - Pan of grease on stove in kitchen. Used 200 feet [of] booster hose.

10/14/71 - 12:15 p.m. Check fire hydrants in territory.

10/29/71 - 2:00 p.m. [Chief] brought adapter for hydrant at Watson's Poultry Company and put on Eng 10.

11/7/71 - 8:10 p.m. [First reference to Rescue 2, believed to be the 1954 Reo that was moved at the time to Station 10 ]

11/27/71 - 3:00 p.m. [Chief] inspected station and found everything in good order.

12/3/71 - 3:22 p.m. [After returning from call] tire chain was put on.

12/16/71 - 3:02 p.m. Verbal call, 2500 block Sanderford Road. School bus.

12/23/71 - 6:29 p.m. Eng. 10 answered alarm to 1034 Bragg St., to women's prison. Boiler on fire, used 200 ft. 1 1/2" hose for approx. 40 min. Eng 3 laid feeder line. 7:15 p.m. Eng 10 returned to station and loaded hose. 7:30 p.m. Reported [back in service].

12/23/71 - 12:50 p.m. Telephone call [to] 3320 Garner Rd. Blind School. Hay, grass, trash on fire across railroad at old dairy barn.

12/30/71 - 8:12 a.m. [Chief] was notified of the right hand [overhead] door. The door would not stay up.

12/30/71 - 6:10 p.m. Rescue 3 came and got the boats to go to a drowning at Gresham Lake.

1/27/72 - 12:10 p.m. Eng. 10 answered telephone alarm to 2500 block Garner Rd., to overturned oil truck.

2/15/72 - 1:20 p.m. [In service with radio] in territory. Preplanning Carnage School.

2/19/72 - 5:24 a.m. Eng 10 answered telephone call to 1445 Sawyer Rd. Returned en route by Car 5.
