On July 7, 1981, Raleigh's worst fire in a decade culminated with this wall collapsing onto the Fayetteville Street Mall. Thousands of spectators collectively gasped as the bricks tumbled down from the Mangel's Building. The collapse occurred at 11 a.m., more than two hours after smoke was first reported from a second-floor window. Debris also fell into an adjacent parking lot, crushing two cars and damaging a third. No one was injured by the collapse.
