Blamed on a burning match in a cardboard box, a stubborn six-hour fire gutted the turn-of-the-century Howard Building at 112 E. Lane Street. Nearly 100 firefighters, working in shifts of 40, battled the 4:15 p.m. blaze. Volunteers from the Six Forks Fire Department assisted with refilling air tanks as more than 100 tanks were depleted by the end of the evening.
