Chemical Engines
In 1878, a hand-drawn Champion single-tank chemical engine was
acquired by the Phoenix Chemical Company. In 1881, a hand-drawn Champion
double-tank chemical engine was acquired. In 1886, the double-tank engine was
converted to be horse drawn. The fire company disbanded by 1890 and the
remaining service life of the engines is not known. Drawings of two Champion
chemical engines from catalog pictures (but not necessarily representing
apparatus used in Raleigh) are presented below:
