Hand-Drawn Hose Reels
Hand-drawn hose reels were first purchased for the fire
department in 1870, and were used to accompany the Rescue Company steam fire
engine and possibly the Victor Company hand engine. Additional reels were added
to the fire department beginning in 1887, and were used to connect directly to
the city's new fire hydrants. The city's hand reels were supplanted by
horse-drawn hose wagons in the 1890s. One type of hand reel is depicted below in
a Rumsey and Company catalog drawing.
