Hook and Ladder Trucks
Hook and ladder companies protected the Capital City beginning
in 1852. In 1872, a new hand-drawn hook and ladder truck was delivered. In 1890,
a new horse-drawn hook and ladder truck was delivered. The ladder truck was named "W. R. Womble."
Called a "steel-frame city service truck" it was "fully equipped with 215 of ladders,
including one 65 foot Bangor extension ladder; also two pompier scaling ladders,
two fire extinguishers, and a complete assortment of valuable firefighting
tools." The ladder truck was placed in service July 1, 1890. The
competition team of the Hook and Ladder team is depicted below. The image
presumably depicts a "racing wagon." Other ladder trucks from the 1880s are also
depicted in Rumsey and Company catalog drawings, but do not necessairly
represent apparatus used in Raleigh.
