Rumsey Hand Engine
By June 13, 1875, a side-stroke hand engine was purchased for
the Victor Company. The apparatus cost about $1,700, and was purchased from
Rumsey and Company in Seneca Falls, New York.. The four-wheeled apparatus was horse-drawn at
this time. By the late 1890s, the hand engine had been placed in reserve status. An 1880s catalog drawing of
a Rumsey hand engine is presented below, though does not necessarily represent
the apparatus used in Raleigh.:
