1870 Gould Steamer
Purchased by the Rescue Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1 for
$5,000, the city's first steam fire engine was a hand-drawn second-size Gould
steam fire engine with a capacity of 600 GPM. The apparatus was hand-drawn until 1879,
upon which time horses were purchased by the city for the apparatus. The engine
was also periodically pulled by horses for events such as parades. Additionally, a hand-drawn hose reel
accompanied the steam engine to fires. The steamer was in reserve status by the
1890s and the city acquired a new steamer in 1905. Below is a drawing of a Gould
steamer that appeared on the certificate of membership of the Rescue Company.
